I actually think it is too fast for the American public, to be honest. I know I would rather watch hockey than even 1 second of basketball. Lord I hate that sport, and it's annoying "stars".

I can't imagine ever living to see the day that Welshland qualify, so it's been England for me since about circa 1890 or thereabouts.

Eeesh, did anybody else see that in last nights TV ratings Womens College Softball drew more viewers than game one of the Stanley Cup finals in the US!?! I think the NHL needs to rethink it's strategy.

Nobody in the US watches softball, except maybe girls. I coach my daughters team (am even on the commision board) and I don't even watch the stuff!

It's called softball because the ball is much larger than your standard baseball, also called "hardball". I know the 16" variety of the sport is pretty much a Chicago original, but I am not so sure if the rest of the world knows what "Softball" is. It's basically baseball but with a larger ball and pitched underhand. Girls college softball (and now the pro version) throws underhand, but they use a 12" ball and their pitches are damn fast and come from odd angles. Jenny Finch, the premier softball pitcher, faced off against major league baseball players during an All-Star game a few years ago. In other words, she faced the best in the game, and none of them could hit her stuff.

US, of course for me.....and even if we do get knocked out of the "pool of death", I'll still be following the World Cup, since I'm having a fantasy World Cup draft tomorrow night. I would follow it anyway, since I love the game. It will be nice to not have to set the alarm for 3 am on a Wednesday night, just to watch the US this time around. I'm hoping we can somehow knock off Czech Republic. I can't wait til Friday!

i watched a high school girls softball game once (waiting for our baseball game to start) and let me tell ya, i don't think i'd be able to step in there and hit that. they say that a 60mph softball pitch is the equivalent to a 90mph hardball pitch and the girl in the college game on TV was throwing in the upper 60s.

Carl, they used to show that 16inch game on ESPN a few years back. It was pretty interesting. They say the balls are mush and are quite difficult to hit for distance. If im not mistaken, they didn?t use gloves either did they?

You are correct, no gloves usually. Some people might wear one, but most don't. The ball is pretty mushy also and it is a pain to get any real distance with. But most the guys that play the game are about as mushy as the ball! LOL! It's kind of a game played for the same reason as Rugby. I hear most local Rugby leagues are based more around the bar afterwards, and that is kind of how 16" softball works, or used to. People are taking it much more serious nowdays though.
